Enterprises & Markets
Expanding income and enterprise opportunities where people live and work
In rural Odisha, farming alone no longer provides stable incomes. Landholdings are small, rainfall unreliable, and markets often distant. Migration has become a routine part of how families supplement earnings, with many households in programme areas depending on it across seasons.
For women entrepreneurs and small producers, barriers limit how far enterprises can grow. Credit is scarce, larger markets are hard to reach, and business development support is thin. Migrant remittances flow back to villages, but without financial services to channel them, they rarely go toward longer-term investment.
Migrant remittances, women’s collectives, and emerging local enterprises are already reshaping how rural Odisha earns. Our work focuses on strengthening producer collectives, supporting women-led businesses, and expanding financial access so that these shifts contribute to more secure livelihoods over time.
